Real estate taxes are one of the largest revenue sources for a town, city, and county, and it is calculated by multiplying the locale’s tax rate by the property’s assessed market value. Although the average real estate tax rate in Virginia is lower than the national average, tax rates in Northern Virginia are almost twice as high as rates found in other parts of the state.

Mortgage lenders typically hold property tax payments in escrow to protect themselves in case of foreclosure. To make the tax amount manageable, homeowners pay a portion of their estimated taxes with their monthly mortgage payments. However, it is ultimately the property owner’s responsibility to pay taxes in full and on time.
